Noelene Smith will be awarded the James & Pearl Campbell Peace and Justice Award on October 22nd, 2025 at the Capital Area Council of Churches Fall Awards Celebration Dinner.
Noelene Smith, raised in poverty in Jamaica, was inspired by her aunt, an educator who taught learners of all ages. After moving to the U.S. at 13, she pursued education and earned a master’s in social work from the University at Albany. With over 30 years in social work, Smith saw firsthand the struggles of underserved communities. In response to educational inequities, she founded the Baby Institute in 2010, a nonprofit that empowers parents to become their children’s first teachers through literacy and parenting support. She remains a dedicated advocate, helping families and promoting education across Albany.
